Dr. John C. Slater received his B.S. in Chemistry and B.S. in Physics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1993. He went on to receive his PhD in Organic and Medicinal Chemistry from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1997 while developing a novel line of chemotherapy drugs. During his graduate studies, Dr. Slater had numerous papers published in various highly respected scientific journals and was awarded the American Chemical Society's Division of Organic Chemistry Pre-Doctoral Fellowship on his way towards publishing his thesis entitled "Synthesis, Biological Activity and Structure-Activity Relationship (SAR) Study of Novel 3' - Alkyl, 3'- Alkenyl and 3'-Flourinated Taxoids."
Dr. Slater has been a high school Chemistry and Physics teacher for 18 years and currently teaches Honor Physics and Calculus-based Advanced Placement Physics at Garden City High School (NY) - recently ranked as #1 high school in New York State. During this time, he also published a Chemistry text with an associated series of computer simulations to aid in the visualization of abstract scientific concepts for use by high school-aged students.
In his spare time, Dr. Slater enjoys marathon running (2004 & 2007 Marine Corp. marathons, 2009 & 2010 Walt Disney World marathons and 2011 National Breast Cancer marathon) and renovating his home. Dr. Slater lives on Long Island with his wife Beth and their children.
Dr. Slater has served on the Handgun Safety Training Corporation Board of Directors since January 2016.
